How to Make Your Website Domain the Handle for your Bluesky Account

Use URL as your handle in Bluesky

If you use Bluesky social, you’ve noticed you can’t remove .bsky.social from your handle so it appears as handle.sky.social.

There is a way, though, to change your handle so it shows your domain name, which is great for branding or marketing.

Here’s how.

You will need to have your own domain name and access to the DNS settings for that domain. In my case, I own the domain akinscreative.com and use Siteground to host domains and hosting.

Step 1

Go to Home –> Settings –> Account — Handle.

Step 2

Click on “I have my own domain ->”. You should be on the screen below.

Enter your domain as yourdomain.com. Do not add https:// or other schemes.

Step 3

You must be familiar with editing your DNS settings or ask someone to help you. You can mess up your website if you make an error.

Go to the DNS settings for your domain. This will be either through the company you bought it through or through the service that’s hosting your site, depending on how your nameservers are set.

Create a new TXT record.

Copy and paste the Host content from Bluesky to the Name element for the TXT record, shown with the green oval below. Mine is _atproto but yours could be different.

Copy and paste the Value content from Bluesky to to value element for the TXT record, shown with the blue circle below. The Value record will appear to be a string of random numbers and letters.

Wait a few minutes for the change to propagate. More content after the image below.

Make your domain name the handle on Bluesky Social.

Click “Verify DNS Record”. If you accurately copied and pasted the data, you’ll get a green confirmation message.

Afterwards, your handle should appear as your domain, as circled in green below.
